The Public Works Department is responsible for the daily operation of the city’s streets, right-of-ways, drainage, cemeteries, and maintenance shop. These responsibilities include about 125 miles of streets, 2,000 catch basins, 70 miles of storm sewers, numerous miles of ditches and canals, 4 storm water pumping stations, traffic signals, traffic signs, and a large acreage of land to maintain vegetation within the corporate limits of Cleveland.
All city water and sewer maintenance is contracted out to Severn Trent Environmental Services, Inc. and Public Works is responsible for overseeing the fulfillment of this contract and works closely with Severn Trent staff to ensure the very best in quality drinking water and sanitary sewer service for citizens of Cleveland.
Public Works Administration
The Department of Public Works is located at 1098 Old Highway 61 North at the old Color Tile facility and may be contacted by calling 662-843-5365. Citizens are encouraged to contact the Public Works Department if they see problems with streets, sidewalks, traffic lights, traffic signs, cemeteries, or drainage. Complaints or concerns may be made by contacting Public Works Director Ray Bell or Public Works Clerk Brandy Murphy. Public Works hours of operation are from 7:00-12:00 and 1:00-4:00 Monday through Friday.
As part of the ongoing efforts of Public Works personnel to keep Cleveland beautiful, the city participates in the MDOT Inmate Litter Program. Personnel routinely pick up trash along the highways and streets in Cleveland, however citizens are asked to help keep Cleveland clean by picking up any trash they see and properly disposing of it.
All Cleveland water and sewer maintenance is performed by contract with Severn Trent Environmental Services, Inc. (S.T.). Cleveland citizens may contact Severn Trent personnel to report any problems with the city water or sewer systems at 662-843-0601. Residential garbage pickup is contracted by Resourceful Environmental Services (R.E.S.). Every residential household receives garbage and trash pickup twice per week. Residents experiencing problems with garbage collection may contact R.E.S. at 662-843-0110. All commercial solid waste is handled privately through the waste handler of your choice. The city does not provide garbage service to commercial businesses.
City Street crews pickup limbs weekly as long as they are less than 5 feet in length, 9 inches in diameter, and do not weight more than 60 pounds. If you need limbs picked up that have been out longer than one week, please contact the Public Works Department at 662-843-5365.
Street Division
Larry Glinsey serves as the Street Superintendant. The Street Division of Public Works performs a myriad of daily tasks such as:
·Repairing or patching streets
·Repairing or replacing sidewalks
·Sweeping city streets
·Maintaining traffic signals, street painting, and signs
·Keeping right-of-ways in neat and orderly appearance
·Maintaining the multitude of storm drains, pumps, culverts, ditches, and canals
·Litter and limb pickup
Cemetery Division
The City of Cleveland owns and operates four cemeteries. The Cemetery Division under the management of Benji Morgan sees to the daily operation, burials, arrangements, and locations in all city cemeteries. Benji Morgan may be contacted during normal working hours at 662-843-5365. The four city cemeteries in operation at this time are:
·New Cleveland Cemetery - at the corner of Rosemary Road and N. Bayou Road
·North Cleveland Cemetery - further north along N. Bayou Road from New Cleveland Cemetery
·Old Cleveland Cemetery - on the west side of Jones Bayou at Cemetery Drive
·Westlawn Memorial Gardens - on Mullins Road
Burial Costs are as follows:
Plot where deceased lived in Cleveland ……………$550.00
Plot where deceased lived outside Cleveland …….. $650.00
Opening and Closing during week …………………$325.00
Opening and Closing during weekend ……………..$400.00
No interments are made on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or New Years Day.

Shop Division
The city maintenance shop is located at Public Works and is managed by Donald McMurry. Their primary responsibility is to keep city vehicles and equipment in good working order.
